I gioielli di Lea Stein

Lea Stein a Casalmaggiore! L’artista francese, considerata la designer più innovativa nel campo dei gioielli in materiale plastico, ha scelto il Museo del Bijou per raccontare la sua vita e soprattutto il percorso creativo che l’ha resa una vera icona di stile, adorata da collezionisti di tutto il mondo. A rendere possibile questa mostra, prima in Italia, Lorena Taddei, antiquaria milanese, già collaboratrice fin dal 2017 del Museo del Bijou ai tempi della mostra “Galalite, bachelite & Co. 121 impugnature d’ombrello e altre meraviglie”, che ha fatto da trait d’union fra l’artista e il Museo.
Direttamente dall’archivio parigino di Lea Stein sono così pervenuti a Casalmaggiore centinaia di pezzi mai esposti prima: le spille più rare, fra cui le strabilianti serigrafate, gli oggetti di tabletterie (alcuni dei quali creati come prototipi per Guerlain), bracciali, anelli, collane e bottoni… Fiumi di bottoni!
Proprio da un bottone parte l’avventura sentimentale, e poi anche professionale, di Lea e Fernand Steinberger: si incontrano per caso, lui si complimenta per un originale bottone che lei indossa e… scatta la scintilla. Solo alcuni anni dopo quell’incontro, però, i due si ritrovano e possono unire le loro vite e le loro passioni.
Nata nel 1936 a Parigi da famiglia ebrea di origine polacca e sfuggita agli orrori della guerra, Lea Stein ha iniziato la produzione delle sue spille negli anni ’60: i collezionisti ben conoscono i suoi famosissimi personaggi (la Ballerina, Carmen, la Tuffatrice…) e gli animali (il cane Ric, il gatto Gomina, la famosa Volpe…), realizzati nelle più curiose e affascinanti fantasie con fogli di acetato di cellulosa, tagliati e “sovrapposti” dal marito Fernand con una tecnica da lui stesso inventata e mai uscita dal segreto familiare, da sempre oggetto di imitazioni in tutto il mondo. L’originalità dei suoi pezzi è quindi affidata a questa ricetta geniale ed è garantita dai fermagli di chiusura a “coda di rondine” sui quali è incisa la scritta “Lea Stein – Paris”.
“Immergersi nel mondo delle creazioni di Lea Stein-scrive la curatrice della mostra- è un’esperienza totalizzante: colori e forme molteplici si rincorrono dando vita a monili vibranti dai tratti puliti che trasmettono l’essenza dei soggetti rappresentati e la variegata personalità artistica dell’autrice”. 
Ricordiamo, fra i numerosissimi appassionati di Lea Stein anche l’ex Segretario di Stato USA Madeleine Albright, che ha incluso nel suo libro “Read my pins” alcuni bijoux dell’artista francese, all’interno della sua famosa collezione personale di magnifici gioielli; e che Lea Stein ha risposto all’appello della senatrice australiana Christine Milne creando la spilla Lemure, per la salvaguardia di questa specie, in via di estinzione, in Tasmania.
Lorena Taddei in questa esposizione ne racconta la storia, alcuni aneddoti legati all’ispirazione creativa, alla produzione, alla diffusione e al successo del marchio, sulla base delle lunghe chiacchierate con Mme Lea e Mr Fernand.

Alla inaugurazione, il 19 ottobre alle ore 17,00, hanno presenziato M.me Lea Stein e la figlia, architetto Carole Steinberger.

Lea Stein in Casalmaggiore! The French artist, considered the most innovative designer in the field of plastic jewellery, has chosen the Museum of Bijou to tell her life and, above all, the creative path that made her an actual icon of style, praised by collectors all over the world. To make this exhibition a reality, first in Italy, Lorena Taddei, a Milanese antique dealer, who has been cooperating with the Museum of Bijou since 2017 at the time of the exhibition “Galalite, bakelite & Co. 121 umbrella handles and other wonders”, representing a trait d’union between the artist and the Museum.

Hundreds of pieces never before on display have thus come from the Parisian archive of Lea Stein to Casalmaggiore: The rarest brooches, including the amazing silkscreens, tableware objects, some of which created for Guerlain, bracelets, rings, necklaces and buttons…countless buttons!

Lea and Fernand’s sentimental, and then, also professional, adventure starts from a button: They meet by chance he congratulates her on an original button that she wears and love blossoms. Only a few years after that meeting, however, the two meet and can merge their lives and their passions.

Born in 1936 in Paris from a Jewish family of Polish origin who escaped the atrocities of war, Lea Stein has started to produce her brooches in the 1960s: Collectors, who perfectly know her very famous characters ( the Dancer, Carmen, the Diver …) and the animals (Ric the dog, Gomina the cat, the famous Fox …), made in the most curious and fascinating patterns with layers of cellulose acetate, cut and “superimposed” by her husband Fernand Steinberger with a technique that he himself has invented and never left the family secret, subject of imitations all over the world since ever. The originality of her creations is thus entrusted to this brilliant recipe and it is guaranteed by the “dovetail” buckles on which IS engraved the inscription “Lea Stein – Paris”,

“Immerse yourself in the world of creations by Lea Stein is an all-embracing experience: several colours and shapes chase each other, creating vibrant jewels with smooth lines that convey the essence of the subjects represented and the varied artistic personality of the author”. 

In this exhibition Lorena Taddei tells the story of this designer, some anecdotes connected to the creative inspiration, production, diffusion and success of the brand (among the many enthusiasts of Lea Stein there is the US Secretary of State Ms. Madeleine Albright; for the Australian govern the very nice brooch Lemure has been created …), on the basis of the long chats with Mme Lea and Mr Fernand.

At the inauguration, on 19 October at 17.00, were present M.me Lea Stein and her daughter, architect Carole Steinberger.
